Looking through my text messages, I’ve found I’ve mentioned Perplexity to friends hundreds of times over the past year—sharing links, prompting advice, and general recommendations. As my Pro subscription approaches renewal, I wanted to give you my completely unfiltered review of this AI search tool that’s become essential to my workflow.
Pro mode is my favorite feature because it delivers wonderfully concise answers in seconds. In today’s world where brevity matters more than ever, Pro mode creates perfectly formatted, copy-pastable outputs. The Reasoning mode uses “thinking models” like R1 from DeepSeek, 03 mini, and Claude 3.7 Sonnet to process more complex queries.
I love the rewrite function, which lets you retry searches with different models when you’re not satisfied with results. The sharing options are excellent too—direct links, PDF export for emailing, and markdown format for passing to other LLMs (I also subscribe to Claude and often transfer Perplexity results there).
Spaces works similarly to Claude projects, allowing you to create dedicated areas with specific contexts, uploaded documents, and predefined instructions. While it doesn’t always perfectly follow instructions, it’s a useful feature that’s continuously improving.
The biggest complaint I hear (and share) is Perplexity’s poor memory for follow-up questions. After 3-4 exchanges, it often completely forgets the conversation topic, making it frustrating for coding or complex discussions.
